Cameroon scale

The Cameroon scale (Selenaspidus kamerunicus) is a pest species belonging to the family Diaspididae (armored scales) within the order Hemiptera. These insects are well-known for their protective covers that shield them from environmental factors and chemical treatments, making them persistent pests in various climate zones.

This pest primarily attacks citrus species, but it also has a wide range of host plants including various ornamental shrubs and tropical trees. Due to its secretive nature and small size, infestation is often detected only when significant damage to the plant has already occurred.

The life cycle involves an egg stage, a crawler stage (the only mobile phase), and the sessile adult stage. Adult females remain under their hard, waxy shells for their entire life, feeding continuously on the host tissue, while crawlers facilitate the spread of the infestation to adjacent leaves or nearby plants.

Damage is caused by the extraction of plant sap, which leads to chlorosis, stunted growth, and the wilting of foliage. In severe cases, the scale insects can cover stems and leaves so densely that they block stomata, severely reducing the plant's metabolic activity and overall vitality.

Integrated pest management strategies for control include:

• Regular monitoring of foliage for signs of scale formation.
• Pruning and destroying heavily infested branches to reduce population pressure.
• Application of horticultural oils or contact insecticides specifically during the crawler emergence phase.
• Systemic insecticides for long-term protection in ornamental greenhouses.
• Implementing strict hygiene practices to prevent cross-contamination between plants.
