Description
Serica alternata is a beetle species belonging to the family Scarabaeidae. These insects are recognized in agricultural practice as significant soil-dwelling pests that occupy specific ecological niches in temperate zones, impacting both soil health and plant vitality through their larval stage activities.
The host range of this pest includes various vegetables, ornamentals, and tree seedlings. The larvae, often referred to as white grubs, primarily feed on the rhizosphere, severing roots and causing the plant to lose its ability to uptake water and nutrients, which is particularly devastating for young, developing crops.
The life cycle encompasses four main stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The females typically deposit eggs in moist soil rich in organic matter. The larvae remain subterranean for one or more years, passing through several instars. This prolonged larval development period makes the species a persistent threat to established crop rotation cycles.
Damage assessment indicates that affected plants exhibit signs of stunted growth, wilting, and eventually die if root damage is severe. The presence of the pest is often discovered when plants easily pull out of the ground. Furthermore, adults may occasionally consume leaves, although this is usually secondary to the damage caused by the larvae underground.
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this beetle. Cultural practices such as maintaining clean fallows, deep tilling in late autumn, and proper crop rotation can reduce larval survival. Chemical intervention with targeted soil insecticides or the application of entomopathogenic nematodes and biological agents remains the primary defense strategy in high-infestation scenarios.
