Description
The Clearwing moth (genus Sesia) belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Sesiidae. These insects are widely known for their remarkable mimicry, as adult moths bear a striking physical resemblance to wasps or hornets, which helps them avoid predators while in flight.
These moths are significant pests of various fruit trees, including apple, pear, plum, and cherry, as well as several ornamental and forest trees like poplars. The damage is primarily caused by the larvae, which are wood-boring insects. They tunnel directly into the bark and sapwood, effectively disrupting the nutrient and water transport system of the tree.
The life cycle of the Clearwing moth typically spans one or two years. Adult females deposit their eggs in crevices or wounds on the bark. Upon hatching, the larvae burrow into the bark to feed on the cambium and xylem layers. They remain inside these galleries throughout their development, eventually pupating within the tree trunk or branches before emerging as adults.
The visible signs of infestation include the accumulation of frass (larval excrement mixed with wood debris) on the surface of the bark, often near the base of the tree. The bark may also appear swollen or cracked, and in severe cases, the trees show reduced vigor, stunted growth, and canopy dieback. Significant larval activity can weaken the structural integrity of the wood.
Effective management requires an integrated approach to maintain tree health and suppress moth populations:
- Exposing and destroying larvae by careful bark cleaning during dormant periods.
- Removing and burning heavily infested branches to reduce local populations.
- Applying trunk washes or paints to deter females from laying eggs on the bark.
- Utilizing pheromone traps to disrupt mating and monitor flight activity.
- Using targeted systemic insecticides or biological controls when larvae are actively burrowing.
