Description

The Hornet moth (Sesia apiformis) is a moth belonging to the family Sesiidae, order Lepidoptera. It is a remarkable example of Batesian mimicry, as its appearance, size, and flight pattern closely resemble the European hornet, Vespa crabro, which provides it with protection from potential predators.

The primary host plants for this species include various trees from the Salicaceae family, specifically poplar (Populus) and willow (Salix) species. The larvae are wood-borers that target the roots and the lower trunk of host trees, preferring to attack both healthy and weakened specimens in forests or urban landscapes.

The life cycle of this pest generally spans two years. During the summer, female moths lay eggs in the crevices of bark near the root collar. Upon hatching, the larvae burrow into the trunk, creating extensive galleries in the sapwood and cambium. They spend most of their developmental period inside the tree, overwintering twice before emerging as adults.

The damage caused by the Hornet moth is significant, as the larvae feed on the wood, disrupting nutrient transportation within the tree. This damage results in weakened structural integrity, increased vulnerability to windthrow, and the introduction of secondary wood-decay fungi, which can ultimately lead to the death of the tree.

Management strategies focus on prevention and integrated pest control. Maintaining tree health through proper silvicultural practices is essential. During outbreaks, insecticide applications targeting the trunk base during the egg-laying period can be effective. Additionally, using pheromone traps for population monitoring helps in timing interventions to reduce larval infestation.
