Description

The poplar clearwing moth (Latin Sesia melanocephala) belongs to the Lepidoptera order and the Sesiidae family. This species is recognized as a significant stem borer that negatively impacts various forestry and landscape plantation health.

The primary host plants for this pest include various poplar species (Populus) and, occasionally, willow species (Salix). The moth is particularly destructive to young nursery saplings and ornamental trees in urban environments, often causing structural weakness of the trunk.

The life cycle of Sesia melanocephala typically lasts one or two years depending on the environmental temperature and region. Adults exhibit Batesian mimicry, closely resembling wasps in appearance, which serves as a defense mechanism against predators during their flight period in the summer months.

Larval damage is the most critical aspect of the pest's activity. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the bark and cambium layer, creating tunnels that disrupt the vascular system of the tree. This process often leaves visible frass piles and entrance holes on the bark, leading to tree decline, reduced vigor, and increased susceptibility to secondary infections.

Strategies include the removal and destruction of heavily infested trees during the winter period, the use of pheromone traps to monitor and disrupt mating cycles, and targeted application of systemic insecticides during the specific time when neonate larvae are attempting to bore into the host tissue.
