Description

Sexava (genus Sexava) is a group of large insects belonging to the order Orthoptera and the family Tettigoniidae (katydids). These pests are primarily found in Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands, where they are notorious for causing severe defoliation and economic losses to tropical agricultural plantations, especially coconut palms.

The primary host for this pest is the coconut palm, though it is also known to infest cocoa, bananas, and oil palms. Being highly polyphagous, Sexava insects can rapidly adapt to various tropical hosts, often leading to outbreaks that decimate large swathes of plantation foliage if left unmanaged.

The life cycle of Sexava follows an incomplete metamorphosis. Females deposit their eggs in the soil around the base of host trees. Upon hatching, the nymphs undergo several instars, gradually increasing in size and appetite. Their development is heavily influenced by humidity and temperature, with prolonged wet seasons often triggering massive population explosions.

As nocturnal feeders, these insects cause extensive physical damage by consuming leaf tissues, flowers, and young fruits. Intense feeding leads to severe defoliation, where only the midribs of the fronds may remain. This loss of photosynthetic capacity drastically reduces yield and can lead to the eventual death of younger or weakened palms.

  • Implement systematic scouting to monitor nymph and adult populations.
  • Employ biological control agents such as the entomopathogenic fungus Metarhizium anisopliae.
