Description
Systematic position. Sexava nubila belongs to the order Orthoptera and the family Tettigoniidae (katydids). It is a large, highly voracious insect species recognized as a significant agricultural pest, particularly in the tropical regions of Southeast Asia and Oceania, where it poses a constant threat to plantation crops.
Host plants. The primary host for this pest is the coconut palm (Cocos nucifera). However, it is a polyphagous insect that also infests oil palms, banana plants, cacao, and various other tropical ornamental or fruit trees, causing widespread damage across diverse agricultural landscapes.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of three stages: egg, nymph, and adult. Females typically deposit their eggs into the soil or plant tissues. Nymphs develop through several instars, gradually increasing in size and developing wing pads. Adults are nocturnal, which makes early detection difficult during the initial phases of an infestation.
Damage and economic impact. Both adults and nymphs cause severe damage by consuming leaf blades, often leaving only the midribs intact. Severe infestations lead to complete defoliation of the canopy. This significantly impairs the tree's photosynthetic ability, results in premature nut drop, reduces overall crop yields, and can eventually lead to the death of the host tree if left unmanaged.
Control measures. Management strategies involve regular population monitoring and the application of contact or systemic insecticides. Integrated pest management (IPM) is highly recommended, focusing on the use of biological control agents, such as egg parasitoids, which are essential for regulating Sexava nubila populations in a sustainable and environmentally friendly manner.
