Description
Systematic position: The pea leaf weevil, known scientifically as Sitona crinitus, belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. It is recognized as a significant pest of various leguminous plants across many agricultural regions.
Host plants and damage: The pest primarily targets peas, lentils, chickpeas, vetch, and alfalfa. The larvae feed exclusively on the root nodules, destroying the nitrogen-fixing bacteria, which results in stunted plant growth. Adult weevils feed on the foliage, causing distinctive crescent-shaped notches along the leaf margins.
Biology and life cycle: Adults overwinter in soil or leaf litter and emerge in early spring to begin feeding on young seedlings. Females deposit eggs in the soil near the host plants. Upon hatching, larvae burrow into the soil to access the root nodules, completing their development before pupating and emerging as the next generation of adults.
Nature of damage and economic impact: The damage is most severe during the early vegetative stage. While leaf feeding by adults may not always be lethal, the destruction of root nodules by larvae significantly reduces the plant's ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen, leading to reduced seed yields and impaired crop health in nutrient-poor soils.
Protection measures: Integrated pest management (IPM) strategies include crop rotation to distance new plantings from previous legume fields and timely cultivation to disrupt the life cycle. Insecticidal seed treatments are highly effective in protecting emerging seedlings. In cases of high pest density, foliar applications of systemic insecticides may be necessary.
