Description

The Lucerne curculio, Sitona discoideus, is a member of the Curculionidae family within the order Coleoptera. This small weevil is a significant pest primarily affecting legumes, with a particular affinity for alfalfa (lucerne) crops across various agricultural landscapes worldwide.

This pest targets a range of leguminous plants, including alfalfa, clover, medics, and vetch. It poses a substantial threat during the establishment phase of the crop, as well as during the early spring growth period when plants are most vulnerable to defoliation and root damage.

Regarding its biology, the insect undergoes complete metamorphosis consisting of eggs, larvae, pupae, and adults. Adults typically overwinter in the soil or under surface debris, emerging in early spring to begin feeding on foliage before mating and laying eggs near the base of the host plants.

The damage caused by the Lucerne curculio is twofold. Adult weevils create distinctive semicircular notches along the margins of leaves. However, the most severe damage occurs underground, where larvae feed on the nitrogen-fixing root nodules, severely hampering the plant's nitrogen fixation capabilities and overall vigor.

Effective management requires a combination of agricultural and chemical practices to keep populations below economic thresholds. Key control measures include:

  • Crop rotation to reduce localized pest buildup.
  • Use of insecticidal seed treatments to protect seedlings.
  • Application of selective insecticides during the peak adult migration period.
