Yellow-legged pea weevil
Sitona fronto
Description
Systematic position: The yellow-legged pea weevil (Sitona fronto) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. It is a significant agricultural pest that specifically targets legume crops, causing substantial economic losses in many regions by interfering with plant development and nitrogen fixation.
Host crops: Sitona fronto primarily infests various legumes (Fabaceae). Its main hosts include peas, lentils, vetch, alfalfa, and clover. The pest thrives in agroecosystems where these crops are cultivated intensively, utilizing them both for adult feeding and for larval development within the root zone.
Biology and life cycle: The insect undergoes complete metamorphosis. Adults overwinter in soil debris or field margins. In early spring, as temperatures rise, adults emerge to feed on young foliage. Females lay eggs near the base of host plants. After hatching, the larvae burrow into the soil, where they spend their development feeding on root nodules, which is the most critical stage of damage.
Damage character and harmfulness: Adult weevils cause characteristic semi-circular notches along the edges of leaves. While this foliage damage is noticeable, the larval damage is far more destructive. By consuming the nitrogen-fixing nodules on the roots, the larvae prevent the plants from obtaining essential nitrogen, leading to stunted growth, yellowing, and significantly lower yields of grain and biomass.
Protection measures: Management of Sitona fronto requires a combination of preventive and curative practices:
- Crop rotation to break the pest's life cycle by distancing new legume fields from infested areas.
- Deep autumn plowing to bury overwintering sites and reduce adult survival rates.
- Early planting to allow plants to establish strong root systems before peak pest activity.
- Seed treatment with systemic insecticides to protect germinating seedlings from early larval damage.
- Foliar insecticide applications during the adult migration period to prevent egg laying.
