Description
Systematic position: Sitona limosus is a member of the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae (weevils). These insects are recognized as significant pests specifically adapted to feed on leguminous plants in various climatic zones.
Host crops: This pest primarily targets a variety of legume crops. Its preferred hosts include field peas, vetches, faba beans, and lentils. Younger plants are at the highest risk, especially during the early development stages immediately after germination.
Biology and life cycle: Adult weevils overwinter in the soil or under debris. In the spring, they emerge and migrate to host fields. The lifecycle includes egg-laying in the soil near the plant roots, followed by the development of larvae that move down into the root zone to feed.
Damage and harmfulness: Adult weevils cause characteristic semi-circular notches along the leaf margins. However, the most severe damage is caused by the larvae, which feed on the nitrogen-fixing root nodules. This destruction impairs the plant’s ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen, leading to stunted growth and reduced yields.
Control measures: Management strategies rely on cultural practices such as crop rotation, spatial isolation from previous year's fields, and early planting to help crops outgrow the most susceptible phase. When thresholds are reached, systemic or contact insecticides are applied during the seedling stage to prevent both leaf damage and root colonization.
