Pea leaf weevil

Systematic position. The pea leaf weevil (Sitona puncticollis) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. It is a significant agricultural pest that causes substantial economic losses in legume crops across various climatic zones, particularly in temperate regions.

Host crops and damage. The pest primarily attacks crops such as peas, soybeans, clover, alfalfa, and vetch. Adult weevils feed on the foliage, producing distinctive U-shaped notches along the leaf margins. However, the larvae are the most destructive stage, as they burrow into the root system to consume nitrogen-fixing root nodules, severely limiting the plant's nutrient uptake capabilities.

Biology and life cycle. Sitona puncticollis overwinters as an adult in the soil or protected leaf litter. As temperatures rise in early spring, adults emerge to feed on young seedlings. Females deposit eggs in the soil, and after hatching, the larvae move to the plant roots to begin feeding. The life cycle completes with a pupal stage in the soil, usually resulting in one generation per year.

Pest impact. The physiological stress caused by larval feeding on root nodules prevents the plant from meeting its nitrogen requirements. Infected crops often exhibit yellowing, stunted growth, and reduced biomass. If infestations occur at the seedling stage, the stand density can be drastically reduced, leading to uneven crop maturity and significant yield losses at harvest time.

Control measures. Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for effective control:

• Crop rotation with non-leguminous species to break the pest life cycle.
• Applying systemic insecticide seed treatments to protect the plant during the critical early growth stages.
• Timely cultivation to disrupt the pupal development in the soil.
• Foliar insecticide applications triggered by scouting and established economic threshold levels.
