Striped pea weevil

Systematic position: The striped pea weevil (Sitona suturalis) is a member of the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. It is recognized as a significant pest in agricultural settings, specifically targeting leguminous plants and causing measurable economic losses in commercial farming operations worldwide.

Host plants: The pest primarily infests various leguminous crops. It poses the greatest threat to pea fields, vetch, and lentils, among other pulse crops. Its specialized feeding behavior allows it to thrive in fields where these host plants are cultivated in close proximity, leading to widespread infestation if not managed correctly.

Biology and life cycle: The insect undergoes a complete metamorphosis, passing through egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. The adult weevils emerge in early spring, feeding on emerging shoots. Following mating, females deposit eggs into the soil near the root zone, where larvae hatch and immediately seek out the root nodules of the host plants to begin their development.

Damage and economic impact: Adult weevils create distinctive semi-circular notches along the edges of leaves, which can stunt the growth of young seedlings. The most severe damage, however, is inflicted by the larvae, which feed on and destroy nitrogen-fixing root nodules. This interruption of symbiotic nitrogen fixation significantly decreases overall plant vigor and reduces total seed yield.

Protection measures: Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for effective control of Sitona suturalis. Recommended strategies include:

• Implementing crop rotation cycles to disrupt the life cycle of the pest.
• Ensuring early planting dates to allow crops to pass the most vulnerable seedling stage before weevil populations peak.
• Utilizing insecticide-treated seeds to provide early-season protection.
