This organism acts as a specialized parasite, primarily targeting woody plants and specifically colonizing the tissues of alder species (Alnus), where it disrupts the normal metabolic processes of the host.
The primary hosts for this fungus are various species of the alder genus. The pathogen is most problematic in stands where trees are already stressed by environmental factors, such as excessive soil moisture or mechanical injury, which provide easy entry points for fungal hyphae to establish colonization.
The biology and lifecycle of Sphaeronema alni involve the production of pycnidia, small fruiting bodies that emerge from the bark of infected trees. These structures release conidia during periods of high humidity. The spores are then dispersed by water splash or air currents to new sites on the host, where they germinate and initiate new infections.
