Steinernema affine is a notable species of entomopathogenic nematodes belonging to the order Rhabditida and the family Steinernematidae. In agronomy, while these nematodes are primarily recognized as biological control agents for soil-dwelling pests, their population dynamics in agricultural soils must be carefully monitored to maintain overall soil health and crop productivity.

These nematodes primarily target larval stages of various insects found in the soil. They are highly efficient in seeking out hosts, such as Coleoptera and Lepidoptera larvae, which can damage the root systems of various field and vegetable crops. Although they do not directly feed on plant tissues, their presence and activity are indicators of the biotic balance in the soil ecosystem.

The biological cycle of Steinernema affine is characterized by a free-living, infective juvenile stage. Upon locating a host, the nematode enters the insect body, typically through natural openings. Once inside, it releases symbiotic bacteria of the genus Xenorhabdus. These bacteria multiply rapidly, causing the death of the host within days, providing a food source for the developing nematode population.

The economic impact of this nematode is primarily indirect. In highly managed agricultural systems, an imbalance of soil organisms—including an overpopulation of nematodes—can disrupt the rhizosphere environment. This disruption may hinder nutrient uptake, making crops like maize, potatoes, or various vegetable crops more vulnerable to secondary infections and abiotic stress factors.
