Steinernema puertoricense is a species of entomopathogenic nematode belonging to the order Rhabditida and the family Steinernematidae. These nematodes are specialized soil organisms that play a crucial role in agricultural biological control programs. Unlike parasitic nematodes that target plants, this species specifically exploits insect larvae found in the soil substrate.

The biology of Steinernema puertoricense is defined by its obligate symbiotic relationship with bacteria of the genus Xenorhabdus. These bacteria reside within the nematode's gut in the infective juvenile stage. When the nematode finds a suitable insect host, it enters through natural openings (spiracles, mouth, or anus) and releases the bacteria into the host's hemocoel, causing rapid septicemia and death of the insect.

The life cycle is rapid and nutrient-dependent. Once the insect host dies, the nematodes reproduce within the cadaver for several generations. As the nutrients become depleted, they transition into the infective juvenile stage, leave the host carcass, and disperse through the soil profile in search of new prey to ensure the survival of the population.

In terms of agricultural significance, Steinernema puertoricense is effective against various soil-dwelling insect pests that damage the root systems of ornamental plants, vegetable crops, and turfgrass. By suppressing populations of beetles, weevils, and moth larvae, these nematodes serve as a non-toxic alternative to synthetic insecticides, aligning with modern Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices.

Successful protection measures rely on proper application techniques. These nematodes are sensitive to desiccation and high levels of UV radiation. To ensure efficacy, they should be applied during early morning or late evening hours in humid conditions. It is essential to maintain soil moisture post-application to facilitate the downward movement of the nematodes and their effective penetration into the insect host's environment.
