Description
Steinernema kraussei is a beneficial entomopathogenic nematode belonging to the family Steinernematidae and the order Rhabditida. Contrary to being a plant pest, it is a specialized biological agent used by growers to manage insect populations in the soil without resorting to harmful chemical pesticides.
The biology of this nematode is centered on its search-and-destroy behavior. As an infective juvenile, it actively navigates the soil pore space, detecting signals emitted by its prey. Once a host, such as a weevil larva, is located, the nematode enters the body cavity through natural openings and releases symbiotic Xenorhabdus bacteria.
This symbiotic relationship is the key to its effectiveness. The bacteria multiply rapidly within the host insect, causing septicemia and killing the pest within days. The nematodes then feed on the nutrient-rich host cadaver, reproducing inside it until they complete their life cycle and emerge to search for new hosts.
One of the primary agronomic advantages of Steinernema kraussei is its superior activity at lower temperatures compared to other entomopathogenic species. This characteristic makes it an ideal solution for pest management in temperate climates, where soil temperatures are often too cool for other biological alternatives to function efficiently.
For optimal results, applications should be conducted via soil drenching or irrigation, ensuring that the soil remains moist to facilitate nematode movement. Farmers utilize this organism to protect ornamentals, nursery crops, and various berries from root-damaging pests, effectively integrating it into Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programs.
