Steinernema feltiae is a species of entomopathogenic nematode highly valued in integrated pest management (IPM) systems. Unlike parasitic nematodes that target plants, S. feltiae is a beneficial organism specifically adapted to infect and kill various soil-dwelling insect pests.

Taxonomically, it is classified within the order Rhabditida and the family Steinernematidae. These nematodes maintain a complex mutualistic relationship with bacteria from the genus Xenorhabdus, which play a crucial role in the pathogenic process once the nematode colonizes the host.

The target organisms for S. feltiae include fungus gnats (Sciaridae), western flower thrips (pupal stages), and various shore flies. They are extensively used in professional horticulture, greenhouses, and nurseries to suppress pest populations without the need for synthetic chemical pesticides.

The life cycle involves an infective juvenile stage that searches for hosts in the soil. Upon finding a suitable insect, the nematode enters through natural openings, releases symbiotic bacteria that proliferate rapidly, leading to the death of the host. The nematodes then feed on the bacterial biomass and developing insect tissues to complete their life cycle.

Effective use of S. feltiae requires careful management of environmental factors. The substrate must remain moist, as the nematodes are highly susceptible to desiccation.
