Steinernema carpocapsae is a prominent species of entomopathogenic nematodes belonging to the family Steinernematidae, order Rhabditida. These microscopic roundworms act as lethal parasites of insects, making them highly effective biological control agents used globally in professional agriculture and organic farming systems.
The biology of S. carpocapsae involves an infective juvenile stage that persists in the soil environment. Once the nematode encounters a susceptible host, it enters the insect through natural openings such as the mouth, anus, or spiracles. Upon entry, the nematode releases symbiotic bacteria of the genus Xenorhabdus, which rapidly colonize the insect's hemocoel.
These nematodes primarily target insects that inhabit the soil profile or reside in sheltered areas of the plant. Common targets include larvae of Lepidoptera (caterpillars), various species of weevils, mole crickets, and soil-dwelling beetle grubs. Their host range is broad, allowing for multi-purpose application across diverse fruit and vegetable crops.
The damage caused to insect populations is rapid and decisive. Because the nematodes kill the host within 24 to 48 hours, the cessation of feeding damage occurs almost immediately upon contact. Unlike chemical insecticides, these nematodes continue to reproduce within the cadaver, providing a degree of residual control as a new generation of infective juveniles emerges.
