Stenocoris apicalis

Stenocoris apicalis is an insect species belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Alydidae. Known primarily as a specialized agricultural pest, it is widely distributed across various tropical and subtropical regions, where it poses a notable threat to cereal grain production, particularly rice.

The primary host plant for this insect is rice (Oryza sativa). However, the pest is also frequently found on various wild grasses. These alternative hosts are critical for the survival of the insect population during the off-season, allowing them to recolonize agricultural fields rapidly when the new rice crop is planted.

The life cycle of Stenocoris apicalis encompasses the egg stage, five nymphal instars, and the adult stage. Both nymphs and adults are equipped with piercing-sucking mouthparts. They are well-adapted to the high-humidity and warm-temperature environments typical of their geographic range, which facilitates multiple generations throughout the year.

By feeding on the milky sap of developing kernels, the bugs cause the grains to become shriveled, discolored, or empty.
