Stenocorynus

Stenocorynus is a genus of weevils belonging to the Attelabidae family within the order Coleoptera. These insects are well-known leaf rollers, often found in deciduous forests, where they demonstrate complex reproductive behaviors that distinguish them from many other agricultural pests. They play a significant role in plant pathology due to their leaf-feeding habits.

This pest primarily attacks various deciduous tree species, including birch and other hardwood types. While they are often associated with forest trees, in agricultural settings, they can cause damage to nursery stocks and young orchards. The feeding activity of both adults and larvae can cause significant physiological stress to the host plants.

The biological cycle consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The most distinctive feature of the Stenocorynus life cycle is the female's habit of rolling individual leaves into tight, cigar-shaped structures. These rolls serve as both a protected nursery for the eggs and a contained food source for the developing larvae.

The damage caused by Stenocorynus is primarily foliar. By rolling and consuming the leaf tissues, the larvae drastically reduce the photosynthetic capacity of the plant. Severe infestations can lead to premature leaf drop, stunted growth in young trees, and increased susceptibility to secondary infections by fungi or bacteria entering through the damaged tissues.

Integrated pest management strategies are recommended to mitigate the damage:

• Manual removal and disposal of leaf rolls to break the life cycle.
• Sanitation practices, including the removal of leaf litter where pupae may overwinter.
• Application of targeted insecticides during the peak activity period of the adult beetles.
