Stenoscelis

Stenoscelis is a genus of weevils belonging to the family Curculionidae within the order Coleoptera. These insects are classified as wood-boring pests that primarily infest deciduous trees. As members of the Cossoninae subfamily, they are uniquely adapted to thrive within the subcortical layers and xylem of various host plants, utilizing the tree as both a food source and a protective environment.

The host range of Stenoscelis includes several species of deciduous trees, with a preference for weakened or stressed specimens. In managed forestry and urban landscapes, these weevils can become significant pests. By colonizing trees that are already suffering from drought, mechanical injuries, or fungal infections, they exacerbate the damage and accelerate the decline of the host tree.

The biology of Stenoscelis is centered around a concealed lifestyle. The life cycle involves larval development inside the host plant, where larvae bore extensive galleries beneath the bark and into the sapwood. Adult weevils are typically nocturnal or secretive, making them difficult to detect during the early stages of an infestation without close inspection of the trunk surface.

The damage caused by Stenoscelis is primarily due to the larval feeding activity, which disrupts the tree's vascular system. The internal galleries cut off the flow of nutrients and moisture, leading to crown dieback, reduced vigor, and eventually, the death of the tree. The presence of wood dust or "frass" near entry holes is a primary diagnostic symptom of an active infestation.

Management strategies focus on integrated pest control:

• removing and destroying heavily infested trees to prevent the spread of the population;
• maintaining tree vigor through proper silvicultural practices;
• monitoring for early signs of infestation such as sap flow or boring dust;
• applying targeted insecticide treatments only when necessary during peak adult flight periods.
