The ash weevil (Stereonychus fraxini) is a specialized insect pest belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. It is recognized as a significant threat to ash trees (Fraxinus spp.), frequently causing localized outbreaks in forests, plantations, and urban landscapes throughout its distribution range.
The primary host for this beetle is the ash tree, upon which both adults and larvae feed extensively. The damage inflicted by the ash weevil can be severe, especially for younger trees that are less capable of compensating for the loss of photosynthetic leaf area, often leading to stunted growth or increased vulnerability to secondary infections.
The biological life cycle of Stereonychus fraxini is strictly synchronized with the phenology of the ash tree.
