Description
Sternechus paludatus is a significant insect pest belonging to the Curculionidae family within the order Coleoptera. This species is widely recognized for its detrimental impact on soybean crops, primarily in regions where soybean cultivation is the cornerstone of the agricultural economy, specifically across South America.
The primary host plant for this weevil is soybean (Glycine max). While the insect demonstrates a strong preference for soybean stems, its impact is most severe during the critical stages of plant development, when larvae feeding interferes with the structural integrity and nutrient transport of the host plant.
The life cycle of the soybean stem weevil includes egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Adults emerge from the soil at the beginning of the rainy season to mate. Females deposit eggs inside the stem tissues. The emerging larvae tunnel into the plant, feeding on internal tissues, which causes the formation of visible galls or localized swelling along the stem.
Damage caused by Sternechus paludatus can be devastating. By damaging the vascular system, larvae inhibit the plant's ability to transport water and nutrients to the pods.
