Sternechus subsignatus

Sternechus subsignatus is a significant coleopteran pest belonging to the Curculionidae family. Known primarily as a soybean stem borer, this insect poses a severe threat to soybean production, particularly in South American agricultural regions, where it can cause substantial yield losses if not properly managed.

From a taxonomic perspective, it is classified under the order Coleoptera. The adult beetles are recognized by their robust morphology, typical of weevils. However, the most destructive phase of their life cycle is the larval stage, during which they live and feed internally, protecting themselves from many external environmental pressures and standard contact pesticides.

The primary host crop for this pest is soybean. Adults feed on foliage and young stems, causing minor initial damage. In contrast, the larvae cause major physiological damage by tunneling inside the soybean stems. This internal feeding disrupts the vascular system of the plant, often leading to stunting, lodging, and reduced grain yield.

The life cycle begins with females ovipositing into the soybean stem tissue. Upon hatching, the larvae burrow into the plant pith to feed and develop. Once mature, the larvae may pupate either within the stem or in the soil. Understanding the timing of these stages is critical for determining the optimal window for chemical or biological control applications.

Effective management requires a combination of strategies:

• Regular field scouting to detect adult activity during the early vegetative stages.
• Use of systemic insecticides when the presence of adults exceeds economic threshold levels.
• Implementation of crop rotation to break the pest's reproductive cycle.
