Stomacoccus

Stomacoccus is a genus of insects belonging to the suborder Coccoidea within the family Margarodidae. These organisms are highly specialized sucking pests that primarily impact woody plants. Due to their biology, they often remain undetected until significant damage has occurred, making early identification critical for the preservation of affected plant species.

These pests are commonly associated with various tree species, with Stomacoccus platani being a notable example known for infesting sycamore trees. They extract vital nutrients from the bark and tender shoots, which puts them in the category of serious threats to both forest health and ornamental horticulture in urban environments.

The life cycle of Stomacoccus is characterized by a dispersal phase involving mobile nymphs, followed by a sedentary phase where the insects fix themselves to the host. During the sedentary stage, they secrete protective waxy coverings that shield them from environmental stressors and traditional contact-based chemical treatments, complicating eradication efforts.

The damage caused by Stomacoccus manifests as stunted growth, leaf yellowing, and the decline of the host tree's overall vigor. Continuous sap extraction by these pests weakens the tree's natural defenses, leading to bark cracking and creating entry points for opportunistic fungal pathogens and wood-boring secondary insects, eventually causing dieback.

Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach to maintain the health of the host and suppress pest populations. Preventive measures and chemical interventions are essential for long-term control. Recommended strategies include:

• Systemic insecticide applications during the mobile crawler stage.
