Strophosoma

Systematic position: The genus Strophosoma belongs to the family Curculionidae (weevils) within the order Coleoptera. These beetles are recognized by their distinct appearance and nocturnal behavior, which makes them a challenging pest to monitor and manage effectively in both nurseries and open-field agriculture.

Crops affected: Strophosoma species are polyphagous, meaning they feed on a wide variety of plants. They are particularly destructive to young deciduous and coniferous trees, nursery stock, berry shrubs, and occasionally various legume or vegetable crops planted near woodland borders or hedgerows.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle consists of eggs, larvae, pupae, and adults. Adult beetles are primarily nocturnal, sheltering in soil or leaf litter during the day. Larvae develop underground, feeding on the fibrous root systems of host plants. This subterranean activity often goes unnoticed until the host plant shows signs of stunted growth or chlorosis.

Nature of damage and harmfulness: Adult beetles cause significant damage by feeding on leaf margins, creating irregular, notched edges. In severe infestations, they may consume entire leaves, leaving only the primary veins. Additionally, they can cause girdling on young stems or damage emerging buds, which drastically reduces the vigor of the plant and can lead to plant death in young seedlings.

Control measures: Effective management requires a multifaceted approach. Cultural practices such as maintaining clean cultivation, tilling the soil to expose larvae, and removing weeds that provide shelter are essential. Chemical control is most effective when applied at night, coinciding with the peak activity period of the adult beetles. Barrier methods, such as sticky traps or bands applied to the trunks of small trees, are also highly recommended.
