Fern weevil

The fern weevil (Syagrius intrudens) is a destructive pest of ornamental ferns, belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. Originating from Australia, this species has become an invasive pest globally, particularly affecting fern collections in greenhouses and botanical gardens, where it can cause significant economic and aesthetic damage.

This pest is highly specialized, feeding primarily on various species within the fern family. Common hosts include plants from the genera Nephrolepis, Asplenium, Cyrtomium, and Polystichum. Due to its secretive nature, infestations are often discovered only when the damage has already become extensive, making the plant difficult to recover.

The biology of Syagrius intrudens is characterized by nocturnal habits for adults and boring behavior for larvae. Females deposit eggs into the leaf stalks or young shoots. Upon hatching, the larvae tunnel into the interior of the frond stems, feeding on the inner tissues. This internal feeding disrupts the plant's vascular system, causing stunted growth, wilting, and eventually the death of the frond.

Damage symptoms include characteristic puncture marks on the leaves, deformation of developing fiddleheads, and visible entry/exit holes in the petioles. As the infestation progresses, the plant loses its vigor, and leaves may turn yellow and wither. Early detection is key, as the cryptic behavior of the larvae makes them difficult to target with contact sprays.

Effective management and protection strategies include:

• Implementing strict quarantine protocols for all incoming plant material.
• Manual inspection and hand-picking of adult weevils during nighttime hours.
• Applying systemic insecticides that are absorbed by the plant to target larvae hidden inside the stems.
• Pruning and destroying heavily infested fronds to reduce the population and break the life cycle.
