These moths are characterized by transparent areas on their wings, which, combined with their behavior, makes them excellent mimics of Hymenoptera, such as wasps or hornets.

Host plants: This pest primarily targets species within the genus Salix (willow). It is a significant concern for willow growers, nurseries, and ornamental tree managers. The impact is most severe in young, developing plantations where the structural integrity of the trunks is crucial for future growth.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle is typically univoltine or semi-voltine, meaning development can take one or two years depending on the climate. Females deposit eggs in bark crevices or near wounded tissue. Upon hatching, larvae bore into the inner bark and cambium, creating extensive feeding galleries that disrupt nutrient transport within the host tree.

Nature of damage and economic importance: Larval feeding creates visible external symptoms such as bark cracking, sap exudation, and localized swellings (galls). In addition to the direct physical damage, these galleries provide entry points for secondary pathogens and wood-rotting fungi, which can lead to the death of the infested branch or the entire tree.

Control measures: Managing Synanthedon albicornis requires an integrated approach:

• Sanitation, which involves pruning and destroying heavily infested branches before the adult emergence period.
• Pheromone trapping to monitor population levels and effectively time insecticide applications.
