Spruce clearwing moth

The spruce clearwing moth (Synanthedon cephiformis) is a moth species belonging to the Sesiidae family. These insects are notorious for their boring larvae, which live inside the bark and wood of coniferous trees, making them difficult to detect until significant damage has already occurred.

The primary hosts for this pest include spruce (Picea) species. The moth typically targets trees that are stressed, weakened by environmental factors, or those that already possess mechanical wounds such as frost cracks, sunscald, or pruning injuries where the protective bark layer has been breached.

The biological cycle of this pest is complex, often spanning one to two years depending on the climate. Adult moths emerge during the summer months to mate. Females deposit eggs in bark fissures or around existing wounds. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the inner bark and cambium layers to feed, creating irregular tunnels.

The primary symptom of infestation is the presence of resin flow (pitch tubes) on the trunk, often mixed with frass (larval waste). As the larvae continue to feed, they disrupt the tree's vascular system. Prolonged infestation weakens the tree, makes it susceptible to secondary pests and pathogens, and can eventually lead to branch dieback or total mortality.

Effective management requires a combination of cultural and chemical strategies. Cultural controls include maintaining tree vigor through proper watering and fertilization, and ensuring that any mechanical wounds are promptly cleaned and protected. In cases of high infestation, insecticides applied during the peak flight period can help manage the adult population and prevent further egg-laying.
