Codeti clearwing moth

The Codeti clearwing moth (Synanthedon codeti) is a destructive pest belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Sesiidae. These moths are well-known for their resemblance to wasps, an evolutionary adaptation that helps them avoid predators while being active during the daytime in orchard environments.

The primary host plants for this species are stone fruit trees, including apricot, peach, plum, and almond. The larvae are borers, meaning they spend the majority of their life cycle inside the woody tissues of the tree, which makes them extremely resilient to conventional surface-applied chemical treatments.

The life cycle of Synanthedon codeti typically spans one or two years depending on the environmental conditions. Adult females deposit eggs in the crevices of the bark, particularly around grafting sites or previous mechanical injuries. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the tree, creating galleries in the cambium and xylem.

The economic impact of this pest is significant. The larval boring activities disrupt the vascular system of the tree, leading to severe gumosis (oozing of sap), branch dieback, and reduced structural integrity. In cases of severe infestation, the tree may become so weakened that it dies prematurely, causing substantial yield loss.
