The willow clearwing (Synanthedon flaviventris) is a moth species belonging to the Sesiidae family. These insects are famous for their mimicry, as their appearance and flight patterns closely resemble those of wasps, which serves as an evolutionary defense mechanism against predators.
The primary hosts for this pest are various species of willow (Salix). The moth specifically targets the stems and branches of young trees. Because the larval stage is spent entirely inside the wood, the pest often remains undetected until significant structural damage to the tree branch has already occurred.
