Description

The willow clearwing (Synanthedon formicaeformis) is a moth belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Sesiidae. These insects are well-known for their mimicry, as the adult moths look remarkably like ants or wasps, which serves as a defense mechanism against avian predators.

The species primarily affects trees within the genus Salix (willow), though it may occasionally infest alder or poplar species. The larvae, which are the damaging stage of the insect, bore into the bark, cambium, and sometimes the heartwood of the host plant, disrupting vascular flow and tree health.

The life cycle of the willow clearwing typically spans one to two years depending on environmental conditions. Adult moths emerge during late spring and summer. Females lay eggs singly in crevices, wounds, or near the base of branches, where the young larvae can easily penetrate the bark to begin their destructive development.
