Description

The apple clearwing moth (Synanthedon hector) is a species of moth belonging to the family Sesiidae, order Lepidoptera. This insect is highly specialized and is known for its Batesian mimicry, evolving to resemble stinging wasps, which provides protection from various predators.

This pest is a significant threat to various fruit-bearing trees, primarily those within the Rosaceae family. It is most frequently associated with apple trees, but its host range also extends to pears, peaches, and various other orchard fruit varieties, where it targets the cambium layer.

The life cycle typically spans one or two years depending on the environmental conditions. After eggs are laid in bark crevices, the newly hatched larvae bore into the tree, creating intricate galleries beneath the bark. They spend the winter inside the tree as larvae, resuming activity in the following spring.

The damage caused by Synanthedon hector is often insidious. By feeding on the cambium and phloem, larvae disrupt the nutrient transport of the tree. Symptoms include the presence of frass (larval droppings) at the entrance of holes, localized dieback of bark, and a general decline in tree vigor, which can eventually lead to branch mortality.

Effective management strategies require an integrated approach. Important steps include maintaining tree health to allow for natural callus formation over wounds, pruning infested branches, and using pheromone traps to monitor adult moth populations. Targeted chemical treatments applied during the period of egg-laying or larval emergence are also critical for suppressing population spikes.
