The Alder clearwing (Synanthedon mesiaeformis) is a wood-boring moth belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Sesiidae. These insects are well-known for their mimicry, appearing similar to wasps or hornets, which helps them avoid predation while they are active during the daylight hours.

The primary host for this species is the Alder tree (Alnus). The larvae target the bark and the cambium layer of the trunk and branches, often choosing trees that are already suffering from environmental stress or previous physical damage to the trunk.

The life cycle begins with the female depositing eggs in bark crevices. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately burrow into the tree, creating tunnels where they feed and develop throughout their larval stage. This burrowing activity can last for one or more seasons depending on climatic conditions.

The primary damage caused by the Alder clearwing involves structural compromise to the host tree. The boring tunnels disrupt the nutrient and water transport within the tree, leading to crown dieback, reduced vitality, and, in severe cases, the death of the tree. Exit holes and accumulated frass are key diagnostic signs of infestation.
