Description
The apple clearwing moth (Synanthedon myopaeformis) is a pest belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Sesiidae. It is a wood-boring moth that poses a significant threat to the health and longevity of apple trees, especially in established orchards.
While apple trees are the primary host, this pest also infests other species within the Rosaceae family, including pears, mountain ash, and hawthorn. The larvae thrive in trees with rough bark or those that have sustained prior mechanical damage, which provides easy access for the neonate larvae.
The life cycle typically spans two years, although it can be completed in one year under favorable climatic conditions. Larvae overwinter in galleries under the bark. As temperatures rise, they resume feeding, pupating in late spring or summer. The adult moths are distinctive for their wasp-like appearance, a classic example of Batesian mimicry.
The damage is caused exclusively by the larvae. By tunneling into the cambium and inner bark, they disrupt the tree's vascular system. Prolonged infestation results in stunted growth, dieback of branches, and, in severe cases, the complete girdling and subsequent death of the host tree.
Effective management and control strategies include the following:
- Monitoring population levels using sex pheromone traps placed in the orchard.
- Applying preventive measures to keep trunks smooth and free from damage.
- Using targeted insecticide sprays timed precisely with the moth emergence period.
- Implementing biological control options, such as entomopathogenic nematodes applied to the bark.
- Maintaining orchard hygiene by pruning and destroying heavily infested plant material.
