Description
The apple clearwing moth (Synanthedon pyri) is a significant pest belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Sesiidae. Adult moths exhibit Batesian mimicry, resembling wasps to avoid predators, but the true damage is caused by the larval stage, which develops inside the bark of trees.
This pest primarily infests pome fruits, including apples, pears, and quinces. It specifically targets trees that have bark injuries, pruning cuts, or cankers, as these provide entry points for the larvae to reach the inner tissues where they feed and develop.
The life cycle involves a single generation per year. The moths emerge from late spring through summer. Females lay eggs individually on the bark near crevices. Once hatched, the larvae tunnel into the cambium layer, where they create irregular galleries, feeding on the tree's vital tissues throughout the year.
The economic impact is substantial, as the damage causes localized bark necrosis and girdling of branches. Severe infestations lead to reduced vigor, branch dieback, and in extreme cases, the death of young or weakened trees. Sap flow disruption is a common diagnostic sign of their presence.
Effective control strategies require an integrated approach:
