Talysh clearwing

The Talysh clearwing (Synanthedon talischensis) is a specialized moth species within the family Sesiidae (order Lepidoptera). This pest is recognized for its larval stage, which acts as a wood-boring organism, specifically targeting the cambium and inner bark tissues of various woody perennial plants.

The species primarily affects fruit trees belonging to the Rosaceae family. The larvae are particularly attracted to weakened or mechanically damaged trunks, where they penetrate the bark to establish feeding galleries. This activity disrupts the vascular system, significantly impacting the nutrient transport and general vitality of the infested trees.

The biology of Synanthedon talischensis follows the typical life cycle of clearwing moths. Adult moths are diurnal and exhibit Batesian mimicry, resembling wasps or hornets, which provides them with protection from predators. The larvae overwinter within the host plant, and pupation occurs in the spring or early summer, followed by the emergence of the adults.

In terms of damage, the larvae cause internal structural harm. By boring galleries through the bark, they weaken the woody structure and create entry points for secondary infections by fungi and bacteria. Economic harm includes reduced fruit yield, stunted vegetative growth, and in severe infestation cases, the death of limbs or the entire tree due to girdling.

Effective management and protection strategies rely on an integrated approach. Farmers are advised to prioritize the maintenance of tree health to ensure natural resistance. Key control measures include:

• Rigorous sanitation, including the removal and burning of infested wood during the winter season.
• The use of pheromone-based traps to monitor population density and disrupt mating cycles.
• Targeted application of biological or chemical insecticides timed precisely with the egg-hatching phase, before larvae enter the bark.
• Application of protective sealants on pruning wounds to prevent egg-laying by female moths.
