Rhombus bug

The Rhombus bug (Syromastes rhombeus) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Coreidae. Often found across Europe and parts of Asia, this insect is recognized as a minor pest that can cause localized damage to specific plant groups in various agricultural and garden settings.

This species primarily feeds on plants belonging to the Caryophyllaceae family. They are frequently associated with species like Silene and Melandrium. While they are specialists, in the absence of their preferred host plants, they may occasionally be found on leguminous crops or other wild flora near cultivated fields.

The biological cycle of the Rhombus bug is typically univoltine, meaning there is one generation per year. Adults hibernate during the colder months, seeking shelter in leaf litter or dense dry vegetation. As temperatures rise in spring, they emerge to feed, mate, and deposit their eggs on the leaves of host plants.

The damage caused by these insects stems from their piercing-sucking mouthparts. By feeding on the plant sap, they inject saliva that causes localized necrosis and stunting of the plant parts. Heavy infestations can lead to significant aesthetic damage in ornamental plantings and reduced seed yields in agricultural contexts.
