Description
Tachardiella is a genus of scale insects belonging to the family Kerriidae. These insects are biologically distinct due to their ability to produce a specialized resinous secretion, known as lac, which serves as a protective layer for the female and its offspring throughout their sedentary life stage.
Taxonomically, the genus is categorized within the order Hemiptera. These insects have adapted to a sessile existence, where adults remain fixed to a single spot on the bark or stems of their host plants, relying entirely on sap extraction for their nutritional requirements and metabolic processes.
The host range for Tachardiella includes various tropical and subtropical woody plants, such as acacia and ficus species. Infestations lead to direct sap loss, which results in stunted growth, chlorosis, and, in severe cases, branch dieback and overall decline of the plant specimen.
The life cycle involves a dispersal phase known as the 'crawler' stage. During this period, newly hatched nymphs migrate across the plant surface to locate optimal feeding sites. Once a suitable spot is identified, the nymphs attach themselves, insert their stylets into the plant tissue, and begin the process of building their protective resinous shells.
