Tachardiella cornuta is a species of scale insect belonging to the family Kerriidae. These insects are recognized for their ability to secrete a hard, resinous covering that encases the adult female, providing robust protection against environmental stresses and various chemical control agents.

The host range of Tachardiella cornuta primarily includes various woody shrub and tree species, particularly those adapted to arid and semi-arid environments. The insects preferentially colonize young twigs and shoots, where they insert their stylets into the plant tissues to feed continuously on the nutrient-rich phloem sap.

The biology of this species is centered around the crawler stage, which is the mobile phase responsible for infestation spread. Once a suitable site on the plant is found, the crawler settles and begins secreting the characteristic horn-shaped wax test. The development process is tightly linked to temperature and humidity, which dictate the timing of egg-laying and the emergence of the next generation of crawlers.

Damage caused by Tachardiella cornuta includes stunted shoot growth, chlorosis, and general tree decline. In severe cases, the persistent withdrawal of sap causes the desiccation of limbs and, without intervention, can lead to the death of the entire plant. Additionally, the accumulation of honeydew often triggers the growth of sooty mold, which further stresses the host plant.
