Tachardiella cydoniae belongs to the order Hemiptera and is generally classified within the scale insect group. These insects are sedentary pests that feed on plant sap, causing significant stress to the host tree. Because of their hard, protective coverings, they are often difficult to detect until the infestation has reached a critical stage on the bark of susceptible trees.
The host range of Tachardiella cydoniae is primarily centered on the quince tree (Cydonia oblonga) and related Rosaceae species. They are commonly found on the branches and trunks of fruit trees. While they primarily target the bark, in cases of severe infestation, they can occupy a large portion of the woody surface, leading to competition for space and nutrients within the plant tissues.
The biology of the Quince scale involves a specialized life cycle. Adult females remain fixed in one location under a hardened scale cover, where they produce eggs. The first-instar nymphs, commonly referred to as "crawlers," are the only mobile stage of the insect. Once they hatch, they emerge from beneath the mother's shield to find a suitable feeding site, where they settle, lose their legs, and begin developing their own protective covering.
The damage caused by these insects is physiological and mechanical. As they draw sap from the tree, they inject toxins that lead to tissue necrosis and stunted growth. The secondary effect is the production of honeydew, which serves as a substrate for sooty mold growth. This mold blocks light and reduces the efficiency of photosynthesis, further weakening the tree's health and lowering its tolerance to environmental stress.
