Tachardiella fulgens

Tachardiella fulgens is a species of insect belonging to the family Kerriidae within the order Hemiptera. These insects are well-known for their ability to secrete resinous substances, often referred to as lac, which they use to construct protective structures on the stems and branches of their host plants.

This pest primarily attacks various woody plants and shrubs, with a noted preference for species within the Fabaceae family. By inserting their piercing-sucking mouthparts into the plant tissues, these insects extract vital nutrients, causing localized stress and systematic decline in the vigor of the host plant over time.

The life cycle of Tachardiella fulgens consists of several stages: egg, crawler (nymph), and adult. The crawler stage is the most mobile phase, allowing the insects to disperse across the plant before settling to feed. Once settled, the females remain stationary for the remainder of their life, continuously secreting protective resin.

The damage caused by these insects includes the distortion of succulent growth, branch dieback, and the promotion of sooty mold growth due to the accumulation of honeydew secretions. This mold interferes with the plant’s ability to conduct photosynthesis, further weakening the plant and making it more susceptible to secondary infections or environmental stress.

Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach. This includes cultural practices such as pruning and destroying heavily infested branches to reduce population density. Chemical control is most effective when targeted at the mobile crawler stage before they become protected by their resinous shields, typically utilizing systemic insecticides or horticultural oils.
