Tachardiella larreae

Tachardiella larreae is a species of lac scale insect belonging to the family Kerriidae in the order Hemiptera. While these insects are scientifically interesting due to their production of natural resins, they can also act as pests by colonizing and debilitating specific xerophytic plant species found in arid desert environments.

The primary hosts for this pest include various species of the genus Larrea, particularly the creosote bush. The insects settle on stems and branches, inserting their stylets into the plant tissue to feed on phloem sap. This feeding process drains the plant's resources and often results in noticeable growth stunting.

The biological cycle of Tachardiella larreae is adapted to harsh, dry conditions. During the juvenile stage, known as "crawlers," the insects are highly mobile and disperse across the plant surface. Once they locate a suitable site for feeding, they become sessile and begin secreting a protective, hard resinous coating that shields them throughout their adult life.

The damage caused by these insects is primarily systemic. Beyond the direct loss of nutrients, the heavy accumulation of resinous galls can interfere with the physical integrity of the branches, leading to bark cracking, secondary infections, and in severe cases, the necrosis of the infested parts of the plant host.

Effective management strategies for Tachardiella larreae focus on limiting the spread of the population. Key control measures include:
