Mexican lac scale

Tachardiella mexicana

Description

The Mexican lac scale (Tachardiella mexicana) is a pest belonging to the family Kerriidae, order Hemiptera. It is notable for its unique ability to produce resinous secretions that harden into a protective dome, effectively shielding the insect from predators and environmental stressors throughout its sedentary phase.

This pest primarily infests succulent plants, with a strong preference for members of the Cactaceae family. In agricultural or horticultural settings, the insects colonize stems and branches, establishing permanent feeding sites where they sap nutrients directly from the host plant's vascular tissues.

The life cycle involves a crawler stage, where mobile larvae search for a suitable site on the plant, followed by a sessile stage. Once established, the insect remains stationary, feeding continuously and expanding its resinous shell, which grows in size as the insect matures, making it a persistent problem for succulent growers.

Damage to host plants manifests as stunted growth, localized tissue necrosis, and a general decline in plant vigor. The unsightly resinous crusts not only reduce the aesthetic value of the plants but also create micro-environments that can harbor opportunistic fungal pathogens, leading to secondary infections and tissue rot.

Integrated pest management strategies are crucial for control. Effective methods include:

  • Strict quarantine of new plant material to prevent infestation.
  • Manual removal using a brush soaked in isopropyl alcohol to dissolve the resinous layer.
  • Targeted application of systemic insecticides that remain effective inside the resinous cover.
  • Regular monitoring to catch new colonies early before they spread across the collection.
