Tachycixius cypricus is a species of planthopper belonging to the family Cixiidae within the order Hemiptera. This insect has gained agricultural significance as a pest primarily affecting vineyards, where it thrives by feeding on the sap of the grapevine.

While the grapevine is its main host, the species can also be found on a variety of wild plants and weeds in the surrounding environment. This capacity to inhabit diverse host plants makes it challenging to eradicate completely, as reservoir hosts provide a constant source of reinfestation for cultivated fields.

The life cycle of Tachycixius cypricus involves development through several nymphal stages, which typically reside in the soil or at the base of the plant to feed on roots. Adult insects emerge during the late spring and summer months. These adults are highly mobile and are the primary vectors for dispersing viral and phytoplasmal diseases across the vineyard.

The damage caused by this pest is twofold: direct feeding damage, which weakens the plant and stunts growth, and indirect damage as a disease vector. The transmission of phytoplasmas is the most severe economic impact, often leading to conditions like grapevine yellows, which causes leaf discoloration, poor fruit set, and long-term decline in vine vigor.

Effective management requires an integrated approach that includes:

  • Strict weed control to reduce habitats for both nymphs and adults.
  • Deployment of yellow sticky traps to detect early emergence and monitor population density.
  • Application of systemic insecticides specifically timed to the peak activity of adult insects.
  • Ensuring vineyard hygiene to prevent the spread of phytoplasma-infected sap between plants.
