Description

The genus Tachypterellus represents a group of weevils belonging to the family Curculionidae (order Coleoptera). These insects are recognized as specialized pests of pome fruits, characterized by a long snout and a distinct lifestyle that integrates them deeply into the life cycle of apple and pear trees.

The host range is primarily focused on pome fruits. The apple curculio is particularly detrimental to apple trees (Malus) and pears (Pyrus). They are capable of infesting various varieties, posing a significant challenge to commercial orchardists who rely on high-quality fruit production for the market.

Regarding their biology and lifecycle, these weevils overwinter as adults, usually sheltering in leaf litter or soil near the host trees. During the spring, they emerge and feed on tender foliage and developing buds. Mating occurs shortly thereafter, and females deposit eggs into the young fruit, creating a distinct puncture mark on the surface.

The damage caused by Tachypterellus larvae is internal. As the larvae feed inside the developing fruit, they create tunnels that weaken the structure of the pome. This activity often leads to fruit drop, significant aesthetic damage, and susceptibility to secondary pathogens, rendering the affected fruit unsalable.

Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy. Key methods include the removal and destruction of infested "dropped" fruit to break the life cycle, the use of targeted insecticide applications during the pre-bloom and post-bloom periods, and maintaining orchard hygiene to minimize overwintering sites for the adults.
