Description

Systematic position: Takahashia (specifically Takahashia japonica) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Coccidae (soft scales). It is a significant plant pest known for its aggressive colonization of woody plants, causing concern in both forestry and urban horticulture due to its invasive nature.

Host plants: The pest exhibits a broad host range, primarily attacking various deciduous trees and shrubs. Common hosts include mulberry, persimmon, apple, maple, chestnut, willow, and poplar trees. Because it is highly adaptable, it poses a recurring threat to diverse ecosystems and landscapes.

Biology and life cycle: The most distinct feature of its life cycle is the formation of white, ribbon-like ovisacs on the host's branches during early spring. Once the eggs hatch, the mobile nymphs, or "crawlers," disperse throughout the canopy to find suitable feeding sites. They eventually settle, develop a protective layer, and continue to extract sap from the plant's vascular system throughout the growing season.

Damage and harmfulness: The damage is primarily caused by heavy sap extraction, which leads to leaf chlorosis, stunted growth, and branch dieback. Furthermore, the excretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which creates a physical barrier on leaves and stems, impeding photosynthesis and severely weakening the overall health of the tree.

Protection measures: Integrated pest management (IPM) is crucial for controlling this insect. Mechanical measures include pruning and destroying heavily infested branches. Chemical control is most effective when targeted at the crawler stage, using systemic insecticides. Additionally, dormant oil sprays can be applied in late winter to smother overwintering adults and reduce the population density for the upcoming season.
