Description
Japanese wax scale (Takahashia japonica) is a scale insect belonging to the family Coccidae within the order Hemiptera. It is recognized by the distinct, long, white, cottony-looking ovisacs that the females produce during the spring, which are easily visible on the twigs of infested host plants.
This pest has a broad host range, primarily affecting woody ornamental trees and fruit-bearing species. Common hosts include various members of the Rosaceae family such as plums, peaches, and pears, as well as deciduous trees like maples, mulberries, and horse chestnuts, which suffer significantly from infestations.
The biology of this species is characterized by an annual cycle. Females overwinter on the bark, and in the spring, they secrete large white wax structures to protect their eggs. After hatching, the tiny nymphs, often called crawlers, move to new leaves and twigs, where they insert their mouthparts to feed on plant sap.
The damage caused by these insects is two-fold: direct physical damage and secondary infection. Intense feeding depletes the plant's resources, causing chlorosis, stunted growth, and twig dieback. Additionally, the insects secrete large amounts of honeydew, which leads to the growth of black sooty mold on the foliage, interfering with photosynthesis.
To control and manage this pest, integrate the following strategies:
- Prune and destroy heavily infested branches during the dormant season.
- Apply horticultural oils to target overwintering females or eggs.
- Use contact or systemic insecticides during the crawler stage, which is the most vulnerable period.
