The Indian grey weevil (Tanymecus indicus) is a significant agricultural pest belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. Known for its destructive nature, this species poses a recurring threat to various field crops, necessitating careful monitoring and management by agricultural producers.

The pest has a broad host range, primarily attacking cereals and pulses. Crops such as wheat, barley, maize, sorghum, and legumes like chickpeas are frequently infested. The impact is most devastating during the early germination and seedling stages, where the loss of foliage can lead to complete stand failure.

The life cycle of Tanymecus indicus consists of egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Overwintering occurs in the soil as adults. As temperatures rise in spring, the adults emerge to feed on green foliage. After mating, eggs are laid in the soil near host plants, where larvae will subsequently develop by feeding on roots and organic matter before pupating.

The damage is characterized by jagged, notched edges along the leaves caused by the adult weevils' feeding. In severe infestations, the entire leaf lamina may be consumed, leaving only the midribs. This physiological stress stunts plant growth, reduces photosynthetic capacity, and ultimately results in substantial yield losses for farmers.
